Australian Nurses for Continence (ANFC) is a non-profit national professional interest group of nurses who have specialist knowledge and skills in continence care. As a national organisation, it coordinates the activities of its members in State & Territory branches and provides advocacy on professional issues to promote the role that nurses play in providing continence care.
ANFC members work in diverse roles, in remote, rural, regional and metropolitan areas of Australia to provide specialist advice to individuals with incontinence and other bladder and bowel problems.
This expertise is employed in a range of different health settings and specialist areas, including but not limited to: women's health (i.e.gynaecology, midwifery), men's health (i.e. urology), paediatric health, community care, aged care, acute care, rehabilitation (i.e. spinal cord injury), disability etc. Other members work in areas of health promotion, nursing education and research. Many members manage and coordinate the activities of outpatient continence services. Most of ANFC's members hold the title of either Continence Nurse Advisor or Continence Nurse Consultant. This is an advanced practice role that is usually accompanied by a high level of autonomy and professional responsibility.
ANFC also works collaboratively with other national and state organisations, industry members, consumers and other health professionals to promote continence care for individuals across the lifespan.
