Continence Nurse Adviser (Flinders University) Summary: The Continence Nurse Advisor stream is designed to prepare continence nurse practitioners.
It comprises two core topics:
* The first topic traces the development of continence across the human lifespan, using physiological, anatomical, social, behavioural, gendered and cultural terms. Developments in nursing assessment and management of incontinence (urinary and faecal) are also examined in the light of recent research.
* The second topic is a negotiated clinical practicum designed to meet the clinical experiential needs of the students. During this topic clinical competence is developed and assessed against the national competencies for continence nurse practitioners. Exploration of continence education and promotion through effective communication is undertaken.
A primary health approach is also examined as a preparation for the broad spectrum of health issues presented in the practice of a continence nurse practitioner. A tele-conference and internal tutorial will be offered each semester if required.
The full program of study for this stream is detailed in the course rule for the Graduate Certificate in Health

Advanced Continence Nurse Specialist (Flinders University) Summary: The Advanced Continence Nurse Specialist stream will facilitate extended practice skills and knowledge essential for the expanded advanced role of the continence nurse.
The stream consists of three topics that together will assist the student to develop advanced continence nursing practice, and develop and utilise evidence-based nursing research skills to plan, implement and evaluate care provisions in a specialist nursing environment.
A Continuing Education Continence course is offered for level 4 care workers, and enrolled and registered nurses who wish to develop knowledge and skills to enable them to promote continence in their practice setting. Registered nurses who opt to undertake, and successfully complete, the assessment may be eligible for credit transfer (3 units per module) into the Graduate Certificate in Health (Continence) or, with the approval of the course coordinator, other courses. Each module is offered as a three-day intensive workshop.
